Success in entrepreneurship is often portrayed as a straight line from concept to accomplishment. However, the path is rarely that simple, as Jeff Sekinger’s story shows. Jeff is the founder of Nurp, a financial education and consulting company. Recently, he sat down with Lance Johnson, founder and CEO of Amplomedia, to discuss his entrepreneurial journey and how it is a testament to his resilience, personal development, and the power of vision.

Overcoming Personal Struggles to Achieve Professional Success

Jeff’s entrepreneurial journey did not begin in the boardrooms of Miami but in the depths of personal struggle. “I found out my three values from a guy named John D.  Martini. I took a values determination test and found that my highest values were to have freedom, options, and choices,” Jeff recalls. These values became his compass, guiding him away from a life of addiction and onto a path where he could control his destiny. “I realized I wanted uncapped earning potential and to see the impact on people. I wasn’t going to get any of those things in the corporate world,” he says.

This realization prompted a significant change. Jeff moved from Columbus, Ohio, to San Diego, a shift that symbolized his newfound freedom and the start of his entrepreneurial journey. “That first $100,000 was proof of concept and product market fit,” he reflects, highlighting a milestone that marked his transition from financial instability to entrepreneurial success story.

The Foundation of Success: Personal Development

Jeff’s philosophy is clear: the success of a business is intrinsically linked to the personal development of its founder. “Your level of success in business won’t ever exceed your level of success in personal development,” he emphasizes. This belief is rooted in the idea that personal discipline—established through routines, healthy living, and priority management—is essential for leading a successful business.

He is candid about the importance of leading by example. “If you’re not disciplined in your personal life, there’s very little chance that anyone is going to follow. You’re not going to be able to lead a team if you can’t even lead yourself,” Jeff asserts. This principle has guided him in building Nurp, focusing on personal growth as the cornerstone of his business strategy.

Simplifying Business: Focus on Product Market Fit

Contrary to the popular notion that successful businesses need to be built on groundbreaking ideas, Jeff advocates for simplicity. “You don’t have to come up with some crazy grandiose idea,” he explains. “A lot of times, the most successful businesses are just very simple businesses.” For Jeff, the key is to focus on becoming profitable as soon as possible and ensuring a good product market fit before scaling up.

He warns against the common pitfall of overspending on initial business setups like software and development. Instead, Jeff advises entrepreneurs to first prove their business’s profitability and market fit. “Once you have a good product market fit, then you put money back into the business, scale, and hire the right people.”

Vision, Mission, and Values: The Core of Nurp

As Nurp began to scale, Jeff emphasized the importance of a clear vision, mission, and values. “The foundation of your company is the vision, mission, and values,” he says. These elements not only attract the right people but also guide the company’s growth. Jeff’s leadership philosophy centers on painting a clear vision, hiring the right people, and then stepping back to let the team execute.

The significance of these principles became evident when Jeff faced a major challenge in 2022. “I had a leadership team that ended up starting their own company. They left all at once, and our systems were everywhere,” he recounts. This event, while a setback, allowed Jeff to rebuild his leadership team and grow even stronger. His approach to overcoming this challenge was rooted in accountability and optimistic perseverance—a mindset that transforms perceived negatives into positives.

Addressing Real-World Challenges with Strategic Solutions

Jeff’s journey is not just about overcoming personal struggles but also about tackling real-world business challenges with strategic solutions. One such challenge was the low show rate for appointments, a critical issue given Nurp’s reliance on phone and Zoom calls for sales. Jeff’s solution was to leverage data analytics to track and improve show rates. “We’re tracking everything through UTMs on every single campaign, ad set, and creative,” he explains. By focusing on higher quality leads, even at a higher cost, Nurp was able to improve its overall efficiency and effectiveness.

The Role of Financial Education in Empowering Entrepreneurs

At its core, Nurp is a financial education company. Jeff’s vision for the company stems from a desire to empower early-stage business owners. “Some people don’t have enough capital and business expertise to begin a venture,” he notes. Nurp addresses this by providing essential financial education and consulting services, helping entrepreneurs understand the early stages of business setup, personal credit building, and effective use of financing.

Jeff’s approach to financial education is pragmatic. He emphasizes the importance of understanding and leveraging personal credit to fund business ventures. “We teach people how to get this type of financing so they can start and grow what they want to do,” he explains. This educational focus ensures that entrepreneurs are not only starting businesses but also building them on solid financial foundations.

Future Goals: Mentoring and Scaling

Looking ahead, Jeff has clear goals for Nurp and his personal journey. One of his primary objectives is to mentor the next generation of entrepreneurs. “I’ve almost always had a business coach, even before I could afford one,” he shares. This belief in the value of mentorship drives him to provide the same support to others.

In terms of business growth, Jeff’s strategy involves detailed goal-setting and consistent action. He breaks down goals into manageable 90-day sprints, focusing intensely on achieving specific targets within these periods. “We always set yearly goals, then chunk them down into quarterly, monthly, weekly, and daily tasks,” he explains. This methodical approach ensures that Nurp stays on track and adapts quickly to any challenges that arise.

The Power of Resilience

Jeff Sekinger’s journey from addiction to ambition is a powerful reminder of the resilience and vision required to succeed in entrepreneurship. His story highlights the importance of personal development, simplicity in business ideas, and strategic planning. For aspiring entrepreneurs, Jeff’s experiences offer valuable lessons: embrace personal growth, focus on product-market fit, and build a strong foundation.

As Jeff continues to scale Nurp, his journey stands to inspire the next generation, showing them the transformative power of aligning personal values with professional goals.
